What is UNICEF's Schools for Africa program?

When you Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF this fall, you will be given an opportunity to raise money for UNICEF's Schools for Africa program.  Schools for Africa (SFA) is a joint international campaign founded by The Nelson Mandela FoundationUNICEF and the Hamburg Society for the Promotion of Democracy and International Law.  Schools for Africa was created to address the issue that approximately 45 million children in sub-Saharan Africa do not attend school.  The Schools for Africa campaign, which has raised millions, aims to accelerate access to quality basic education for children, with a special focus on girls, orphans and vulnerable children, such as those who have been impacted as a result of AIDS.  Schools for Africa wants to establish Child-Friendly Schools that are more suitable for the needs of children, so that more children complete at least primary education.  Child-Friendly Schools are one of the most obvious examples of how this holistic approach to education programming results in greater benefits for children.  Child-Friendly Schools and the Schools for Africa campaign provide communities with a sustainable solution for education.  Village inhabitants will build the schools themselves and take over responsibility for them—an important prerequisite for long-lasting aid and sustainability.  Schools for Africa will contribute to the right of every African child to an education with the goal to enroll two million children in school during the five year campaign.
